Dr. Cat McGinnis owns American Heritage Animal Hospital in Snellville, Georgia, and has since 2013. She grew up in Decatur, graduated from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008, and has spent her whole career doing the one thing she decided on as a kid: being a vet and running her own practice.
During vet school she worked with the famous UGA bulldog mascots, UGA V and UGA VI. After graduating, she spent two years at a mixed animal practice in South Carolina, treating everything from house pets to horses. However, home pulled her back, and she returned to Georgia in 2010 to be closer to family. Three years later she bought American Heritage.
Most of the time, the vet you see is Dr. Cat. When your pet comes in for an exam, she is the one examining them, and she remembers what she found last year. Some visits do not need a veterinarian at all, and if she is away for any length of time a relief vet covers. Either way, the protocols they follow are hers. Nobody at a corporate head office decides how medicine is practised here.
Dr. Cat has worked with Great Danes and Great Dane rescue for more than a decade. That much time with one breed makes a real difference: she knows the conditions Danes are predisposed to, the anesthetic and dosing adjustments a giant breed needs, and the early signs of the problems that turn dangerous fast. Dr. Cat spends her free time with family and friends. She enjoys hiking with her dogs, Nellie, Reese’s Pieces, Rizzo, and Miss Piggy. You will often see her dogs behind the reception desk. Clients have also spotted them peeking out of her office door or piling in and out of the clinic van. They love coming to work with their mom.
