In the community

American Heritage Animal Hospital has been part of Snellville for a long time, and a fair amount of what we do here never shows up on an invoice. Some of it is below.

WE ARE NOT A SHELTER. We are a veterinary hospital that provides compassionate care to the beloved animal companions of our clients. Animals that are abandoned at our facility will be transferred to the Gwinnett Humane Society.

Students and future veterinary staff

We run a shadowing program for local high school students, and we work with the veterinary tech program at the local college. Students spend real time in the clinic seeing what the job actually involves. This hands on learning includes everything from drawing blood to observing physical exams and talking with owners.

It works. Misenga came to us through the shadowing program and decided she wanted to become a veterinarian herself. She is a veterinary assistant here now. Ya’el joined the same way, and she is a veterinary assistant here too.

If you are a student in the area thinking about veterinary medicine, call us on 770-972-7026.

Rescue and foster

Dr. Cat has worked with Great Danes and Great Dane rescue for more than a decade. That much time with one breed makes a real difference: she knows the conditions Danes are predisposed to, the anesthetic and dosing adjustments a giant breed needs, and the early signs of the problems that turn dangerous fast. If you have a Dane in Snellville, this is the practice that already knows your dog before it walks in.

Interested in adopting a Dane? Dr. Cat is the president of Southern Style Great Dane Rescue! She also works with Water’s Edge Great Dane Rescue in South Carolina and Lucky Farms Animal Rescue in Tennessee. Check out Southern Style here.

The cats around our block

There is a car repair shop next door that feeds the stray cats, which means the stray cats stay. So we help keep the numbers under control. When kittens turn up, or a cat needs catching, we set a trap, spay or neuter at our own cost, and put them back where they came from. Kittens young enough to be homed, we find homes for.

This is something we do for our own block and the businesses around us. It is not a service we offer to the general public.

If you have strays or feral cats in your own neighborhood and would like to help with population control via spay & neuter, here are some places that can help and are low cost:
